Have you ever stopped to wonder what would happen if God gave you every single thing you ever wanted? For a lot of people, that thought feels overwhelming or even dangerous. But David makes a bold, breathtaking promise: God will fulfill their desire, hear their cry, and save them.
The secret behind this promise isn’t that God gives us a blank check for our selfish whims. It all hinges on a foundational heart posture: fearing Him.
What It Means to Fear the Lord
In modern culture, “fear” usually means terror or dread. But in Scripture, the reverent fear of God is the highest form of love, awe, and deep devotion. It is a holy respect for who He is and a profound care for what He desires.
When you truly fear the Lord, you care deeply about His will. And a funny thing happens when you care about God’s will: your own heart starts changing. You stop hungering for things that harm you or dishonor Him, and you start longing for things that reflect His goodness.
As the old commentator John Trapp noted, Martin Luther once prayed a prayer that sounds startling at first: “Lord, let my will be done!” But Luther could pray that with complete holy confidence because he immediately added: “Because my will is for Your will to be done, and nothing else.”
A heart aligned with God desires:
- His presence
- His protection
- His goodness
- His righteousness
- His mercy
- His guidance
When your heart longs for God’s way, you will get your way—because your way has become His way. A holy heart only desires what a holy God delights to give.
The Savior Who Listens
Notice the second half of the verse: “He also will hear their cry and save them.”
David doesn’t say God delegates your rescue to a committee of angels or saints. He acts personally. When you hit rock bottom, and your prayer degenerates into a desperate cry, King Jesus hears you directly.
Think of how Jesus fulfilled this verse during His earthly ministry:
- He heard the desperate cry of the Canaanite woman and healed her daughter.
- He heard the blind men by the roadside and opened their eyes.
- He heard the outcast lepers and cleansed them.
- He heard the dying thief on the cross next to Him and promised him Paradise.
Never once has a soul cried out to King Jesus in sincere, reverent need and been ignored or turned away. When you are in distress—whether it’s a spiritual battle, a trial in your family, or a quiet heartache nobody else sees—your cry goes straight into the ears of the King, and His hands move to deliver you.
Prayer
Abba Father, You are the King who hears every whisper and every desperate cry. Teach me what it truly means to walk in the holy, reverent fear of Your name. Search my heart today and sweep away any selfish, harmful desires that don’t align with Your goodness. Reshape my longings until my greatest desire is simply to see Your will done in my life. Thank You that You don’t ignore my pain or distance Yourself from my troubles. I bring my current needs to You, trusting that You hear me, You care for me, and You are actively working to save and sustain me. I thank You, Lord Jesus. In Your Powerful name I pray, Amen.

He is very ready to hear and answer the prayers of his people, v. 18, 19. In this appears the grace of his kingdom, that his subjects have not only liberty of petitioning, but all the encouragement that can be to petition.
He will fulfill their desires; they shall have what they ask and find that they seek. It was said (v. 16) that he satisfies the desire of every living thing; much more will he fulfill the desire of those that fear him. He will hear their call and will save them; that is, hearing them to purpose, as he heard David (that is, saved him) from the horn of the unicorn, Ps. 22:21.
