Psalm 139:12 NKJV
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.
When the Night Shines: Finding Peace in God’s Unfailing Sight

MY NOTES
“Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You.” — Psalm 139:12 (NKJV)
Have you ever felt like you’re walking through a dark night of the soul—when hope feels dim, and God feels distant? David reminds us in Psalm 139:12 that even in our deepest darkness, God sees clearly. To us, the night obscures and confuses, but to God, it shines like day. Nothing—no circumstance, no place, no emotion—can hide from His light.
Think of God leading Israel through the desert:
“And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light.” — Exodus 13:21, NKJV
Just as that fire illuminated the wilderness, God’s presence brings light into whatever wilderness you walk through today. Darkness doesn’t confuse Him; it doesn’t limit His sight or understanding. To God, both light and dark are alike—He sees equally well in both.
Sometimes we’re tempted to think that what’s hidden in the dark—our failures, secret worries, or private pain—are beyond God’s reach. But that’s a comforting truth, not a fearful one. Because He sees us completely, He can heal us completely. Nothing we experience is unseen or insignificant to Him.
Even Job declared of God,
“For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all his steps.” — Job 34:21, NKJV
And even in moral or emotional darkness—when we can’t make sense of what’s happening—God is not confused. What’s unclear to us is clear to Him. As Paul later wrote,
“For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” — 1 Corinthians 13:12, NKJV
One day, all that feels dark will glow with meaning, illuminated by His perfect wisdom.
Key Takeaways
- Zero Concealment: There is no “blind spot” in the universe where God cannot see. Whether it’s the physical darkness of night or the moral darkness of a hidden action, God’s sight is absolute.
- Perspective Shift: What we call “darkness”—disappointment, loss, or confusion—is perfectly clear to God. He sees the “why” and the “end” of the trial while we are still in the middle of it.
- Constant Presence: Just as the pillar of fire lit the way for Israel in the wilderness, God’s presence turns our midnight into midday. You are never truly “lost in the dark” because you are with the One who is Light.
Cross References (NKJV)
- Exodus 13:21
“And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.” - Job 34:21
“For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all his steps.” - Exodus 10:21–23: “Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.” So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”
- Daniel 2:22
“He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him.” - Hebrews 4:13
“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
Prayer
Abba, I thank You that I can never wander beyond Your sight. Sometimes my life feels shadowed by worry or hidden by circumstances I don’t understand. Help me remember that my ‘midnight’ is Your ‘midday.’ If I am trying to hide from You, give me the courage to step into the light of Your grace. If I am feeling lost in the dark, let the peace of Your presence be my pillar of fire. Thank You for seeing me, knowing me, and loving me exactly where I am. I thank You for this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Things to Think About:
- The “Dark” Places: What area of your life feels most “dark” right now (uncertainty, a difficult relationship, a struggle)? How does it change your perspective to know that God sees that situation as clearly as if it were in bright sunlight?
- The Safety of Being Seen: We often fear being “exposed,” but God’s gaze is also one of protection. How can you find comfort today in the fact that God sees the things people have done to you or the burdens you carry in secret?
- The Pillar of Fire: Look back at a previous “dark night” in your life. How can you see now that God was providing light or guidance, even when you felt blind at the time?
Proverb for Today
My son, pay attention to my wisdom; Lend your ear to my understanding, That you may preserve discretion, And your lips may keep knowledge. Proverbs 5:1-2 NKJV
Daily Scripture
So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” Matthew 21:21-22 NKJV

Summary of Commentaries:
The commentaries below emphasize that darkness is no barrier to God. While it conceals deeds from men, God’s omnipresence and perfect vision turn night into day. Whether facing moral darkness or life’s trials, nothing is hidden from Him; to our Father, light and darkness are identical, transparent, and fully manifest.
Commentaries:
Charles Spurgeon
“Yea,” of a surety, beyond all denial. “The darkness hideth not from thee;” it veils nothing, it is not the medium of concealment in any degree whatever. It hides from men, but not from God.
“But the night shineth as the day:” it is but another form of day; it shines, revealing all; it “shineth as the day,” quite as clearly and distinctly manifesting all that is done.
“The darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” This sentence seems to sum up all that went before, and most emphatically puts the negative upon the faintest idea of hiding under the cover of night. Men cling to this notion because it is easier and less expensive to hide under darkness than to journey to remote places; and therefore, the foolish thought is here beaten to pieces by statements which in their varied forms effectually batter it. Yet the ungodly are still duped by their groveling notions of God, and enquire, “How doth God know?” They must fancy that he is as limited in his powers of observation as they are, and yet if they would but consider for a moment, they would conclude that he who could not see in the dark could not be God, and he who is not present everywhere could not be the Almighty Creator. Assuredly God is in all places, at all times, and nothing can by any possibility be kept away from his all-observing, all-comprehending mind. The Great Spirit comprehends within himself all time and space, and yet he is infinitely greater than these, or aught else that he has made.

Enduring Word
Even the night shall be light about me: God’s presence with David was like a constant light in the darkness. As the pillar of cloud illuminated Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 13:21), so with God’s presence, the night shines as the day. (Guzik)
i. “Darkness may, indeed, conceal us and our deeds from the sight of men; but the divine presence, like that of the sun, turns night into day, and makes all things manifest before God.” (Horne)
ii. “Darkness is light to Him, and has no hiding place from Him.” (Morgan)

Albert Barnes
Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee – Margin, as in Hebrew, “darkeneth not.” Darkness does not make darkness to thee. It makes things dark to us, not to him. So it is in natural darkness; so in moral darkness ness. It seems dark to us; it is not so to him. Things appear dark to us – disappointment, bereavement, trouble, care, losses; but all is light to God. The existence of sin and suffering on the earth seems dark to us; not to him, for he sees the reasons and the end of all.
But the night shineth as the day – One is as bright and clear to him as the other.
The darkness and the light are both alike to thee – Margin, as in Hebrew, “As is the darkness so is the light.” To thee there is no difference. All is light.

John Gill
Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee,…. Anything that is done by men in it, or “darkeneth not from thee”, or causeth such darkness as to hinder the sight of any action committed. The Targum is, “from thy Word;” see Hebrews 4:12;
but the night shineth as the day; or “enlightens as the day”, gives as much light with respect to God as the day does;
The darkness and the light [are] both alike [to thee]; as is the one, so is the other: the day gives him no more light than the night, and the night no more darkness than the day; he sees as well, as clearly and distinctly, in the one as in the other. The psalmist expresses the same thing in different words three or four times, as Kimchi observes, to show that so the Lord is, that thus it is with him; he has as clear a discerning of all things done in the darkest night as at bright noon day; see Job 34:21.

Matthew Henry
No veil can hide us from God’s eye, no, not that of the thickest darkness, v. 11, 12. “If I say, Yet the darkness shall cover me, when nothing else will, alas! I find myself deceived; the curtains of the evening will stand me in no more stead than the wings of the morning; even the night shall be light about me. That which often favors the escape of a pursued criminal, and the retreat of a beaten army, will do me no kindness in fleeing from them.” When God divided between the light and darkness, it was with a reservation of this prerogative, that to himself the darkness and the light should still be both alike. “The darkness darkeneth not from thee, for there is no darkness nor shadow of death where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.” No hypocritical mask or disguise, how specious soever, can save any person or action from appearing in a true light before God. Secret haunts of sin are as open before God as the most open and barefaced villains.

Miscellaneous Comments
“The darkness hideth not from thee.” Though the place where we sin be to men as dark as Egypt, yet to God it is as light as Goshen.
