We live in a world obsessed with “fame,” but human fame is incredibly fragile. One year you’re a household name; the next, people are asking, “Whatever happened to that person?” Even the greatest monuments eventually crumble, and the most powerful empires become chapters in a dusty history book.
But then there is the Name.
When the Psalmist speaks of God’s Name enduring forever, he isn’t just talking about a label. In the Bible, a name represents a person’s character, power, and reputation. This verse is a victory lap. It reminds us that the God who overthrew mighty kings and carved out a home for Israel is the same God standing over your life today.
The Enamel of Eternity. One of the most beautiful descriptions of God’s character is his immutability—a fancy theological word that simply means He doesn’t change. Think of it like this: if God’s attributes (His love, justice, and power) are the structure of a building, His unchangeableness is the enamel that coats it all. It’s what makes the rest of Him “triumphant.” Because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, we never have to worry that He will be “less good” to us tomorrow than He was to the saints of old. He isn’t having a midlife crisis; He isn’t evolving into a different version of Himself. He is the “I AM.”
A Living Memorial God’s “fame” (or His memorial) isn’t kept alive by statues, but by people and promises. Every time we celebrate a baptism, share Communion, or tell a story of how He provided for us, we are broadcasting His fame to the next generation. We reap the “prestige” of His past victories. When you feel weak, you can lean on the reputation of the God who split the sea. That’s your family heritage!
His Name is a place of preservation. To have His Name “named upon you” means you are under His protection world without end. Kingdoms will rise and fall, and influencers will come and go, but the Name of Jesus retains the full weight of its glory forever.

Those upon whom the Lord’s name is named in verity and truth shall be preserved by it, and kept from all evil, world without end. JEHOVAH is a name which shall outlive the ages and retain the fullness of its glory and might forever.
“And thy memorial, O LORD, throughout all generations. Never shall men forget thee, O Lord. The ordinances of thine house shall keep thee in men’s memories, and thine everlasting gospel and the grace which goes therewith shall be abiding reminders of thee. Grateful hearts will forever beat to thy praise, and enlightened minds shall continue to marvel at all thy wondrous works. Men’s memorials decay, but the memorial of the Lord abideth evermore. This verse must be construed in its connection, and it teaches us that the honour and glory gained by the Lord in the overthrow of the mighty kings would never die out. Israel for long ages reaped the benefit of the prestige which the divine victories had brought to the nation. Moreover, the Lord, in thus keeping his covenant which he made with Abraham, when he promised to give the land to his seed, was making it clear that his memorial contained in promises and covenant would never be out of his sight. His name endures in all its truthfulness, for those who occupied Israel’s land were driven out that the true heirs might dwell therein in peace.

Thy name, O Lord, endureth for ever – Thou art the ever-living, the unchanging God. The generations of people pass away; the kingdoms of the earth change; the idols perish, but thou art the same. The object here seems to be to bring the image or the idea of God before the mind as he was when he performed these great works, as a God interposing on behalf of his people, and as worthy of praise. The idea is that he is the same now that he was then; and as he then impressed the world with a sense of his majesty and power, and as he then interposed in behalf of his people by mighty signs and wonders, we should feel that, being an unchangeable God, he can do it now, and is now equally worthy. of confidence, adoration, and praise.
And thy memorial – Thy remembrance; the memory of thyself. That is, what thou hast done to secure a remembrance among people is of such a nature as to make the same impression on all coming time. The events were such that the memory of them should never pass away from mankind.

Of his glory (v. 13): Thy name, O God! endures forever. God’s manifestations of Himself to his people have everlasting fruits and consequences. What God doeth it shall be forever, Eccl. 3:14. His name endures for ever in the constant and everlasting praises of his people; his memorial endures, has endured hitherto, and shall still endure throughout all generations of the church. This seems to refer to Ex. 3:15, where, when God had called himself the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he adds, This is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. God is, and will be, always the same to his church, a gracious, faithful, wonder-working God; and his church is, and will be, the same to him, a thankful praising people; and thus his name endures forever.

“Thy name, O LORD, endureth for ever,” etc. Immutability is a glory belonging to all the attributes of God. It is not a single perfection of the Divine nature, nor is it limited to particular objects thus and thus disposed. Mercy and justice have their distinct objects and distinct acts: mercy is conversant about a penitent, justice about an obstinate sinner. In our conceptions of the Divine perfections, his perfections are different. The wisdom of God is not his power, nor his power his holiness; but immutability is the centre wherein they all unite. There is not one perfection which may not be said to be, and truly is, immutable; none of them will appear so glorious about this beam, the sun of immutability, which renders them highly excellent, without the least shadow of imperfection. How cloudy would his blessedness be, if it were changeable; how dim his wisdom, if it might be obscured; how feeble his power, if it were capable of becoming sickly and languishing; how would mercy lose much of its luster, if it could change into wrath, and justice much of its dread, if it could be turned into mercy; while the object of justice remains unfit for mercy, and one that hath need of mercy continues only fit for the Divine fury? But unchangeableness is the thread that runs through the whole web; it is the enamel of all the rest; none of them without it could look with a triumphant aspect.
