My Notes

Scripture: “Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth.” —Psalm 119:142 (NKJV)

David lifts his eyes to the unchanging character of God and finds solid ground: “Your righteousness is everlasting.” In a world where values shift and truth is often treated as subjective, this verse anchors us. God’s righteousness is not seasonal, cultural, or conditional—it is everlasting. It does not fade with time, nor does it bend to the whims of society. It is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

The Hebrew word for “law” here is tôrâ (Strong’s H8451), meaning “instruction” or “direction.” This is not merely a set of rules, but the very guidance of God—His revealed will, His moral compass, His covenantal wisdom. And this instruction, David declares, is truth. Not just true, but the truth—the standard by which all other claims must be measured.

God’s Word is not only righteous—it is the very expression of His righteousness. It is the plumb line of justice, the mirror of holiness, and the path of life. It is by this Word that we are judged (John 12:48), and by this Word that we are guided (Psalm 119:105). It is both the standard and the sustainer of our faith.

Human systems rise and fall. Empires crumble. Laws are rewritten. But God’s righteousness and His instruction remain unchanged. His method of saving, His covenantal faithfulness, and His moral order are not subject to revision. As Isaiah declares, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8).

When Jesus stood before Pilate and declared, “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice” (John 18:37), He was bearing witness to the same truth David proclaimed. Pilate, like many today, asked cynically, “What is truth?” (John 18:38). But Jesus knew: “Your law is truth.”

To live under God’s instruction is to live under truth. As rational beings, we are called to align our lives with what is true. If God’s Word is truth, then our thoughts, actions, and affections must be shaped by it. Anything less is not only irrational—it is spiritually dangerous.

This truth is not cold or abstract. It is truth infused with love, truth that redeems, truth that sanctifies (John 17:17). It is truth that leads us to the heart of God.

Time to reflect

  1. Where in your life do you most need to be reminded that God’s righteousness is everlasting? Reflect on a situation where you’ve been tempted to doubt God’s justice or timing.

  2. What “truths” in the world around you compete with the truth of God’s Word? How can you discern and resist them?

  3. When have you experienced the Word of God as a source of direction or correction? How did it shape your decisions or character?

Prayer

Abba, You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Your righteousness is everlasting, and Your Word is truth. In a world of shifting values and fading promises, anchor my heart in Your unchanging instruction. Teach me to love Your law, not as a burden but as a gift—Your voice guiding me in righteousness.

Help me to live not by what feels true, but by what is true. Let Your Word shape my thoughts, my speech, and my steps. May I be one who hears Your voice and walks in Your truth, bearing witness to Your faithfulness in every season.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Summary of Commentaries:

Psalm 119:142 reveals God’s righteousness as eternal and unchanging, a source of joy and assurance for believers. Commentators like Spurgeon and Barnes emphasize that God’s justice is immutable, unlike human systems that shift with time. His law—tôrâ, or instruction—is not merely true but the truth itself, the very foundation of reality and morality. Jesus affirmed this before Pilate, contrasting divine truth with worldly power. From Gill to Guzik, all affirm that Scripture is the enduring standard of righteousness and truth, guiding judgment and salvation alike. God’s Word is not only trustworthy—it is the eternal expression of who He is.

NOTE: Psalm 119 has 22 sections to which each section is represented by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Today, we’re looking at verse 142, which is in the 18th section, which is called “TSADDE צ ”. The website https://hebrewtoday.com/alphabet/the-letter-tzadi-%D7%A6/ has this to say about the letter “TSADDE צ ”: A person who safeguards and protects his eyes from evil things and protects his mouth and speech from saying bad things, will be a tzadi(k), righteous individual. In Jewish tradition, the number 18 represents life because of the word חַי (chai), life, which has a numerical value of 18 (8+10). One who safeguards himself and uses his limbs and body properly will be a righteous person (tzadik) and live a long life.

Commentaries:

Charles Spurgeon

“Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness.” Having, in a previous verse, ascribed righteousness to God, he now goes on to declare that that righteousness is unchanging and endures from age to age. This is the joy and glory of the saints, that what God is, he always will be, and his mode of procedure towards the sons of men is immutable: having kept his promise, and dealt out justice among his people, he will do so world without end. Both the righteousnesses and the unrighteousnesses of men come to an end, but the righteousness of God is without end.

“And thy law is the truth.” As God is love, so his law is the truth, the very essence of truth, truth applied to ethics, truth in action, truth upon the judgment seat. We hear great disputes about, “What is truth?” The holy Scriptures are the only answer to that question. Note that they are not only true, but the truth itself. We may not say of them that they contain the truth, but that they are the truth: “thy law is the truth.” There is nothing false about the law or preceptory part of Scripture. Those who are obedient thereto shall find that they are walking in a way consistent with fact, while those who act contrary thereto are walking in a vain show.

Enduring Word

Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your law is truth: The psalmist confidently stated the everlasting character of God’s righteousness; He is righteous and will not change. Connected to that, he proclaimed that this unchanging God has given us a word (Your law) that is truth.

Your law is truth: We remember the conversation between Jesus and Pontius Pilate. Jesus said, “For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate’s cynical reply was, “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38). For Pilate, soldiers and armies were truth; Rome was truth; Caesar was truth; and political power was truth. Yet Jesus knew what truth was, while Pilate was still seeking. Jesus knew, Your law is truth.

This is especially meaningful in a day when relativism has a strong hold in the everyday thinking of people. It is common for people today to think there is no such thing as “real” truth; there is only your truth and my truth and their truth. Western society used to believe that truth was that which corresponded to reality (what is really there); now truth is often held to be what makes sense or is helpful to me individually.

The late Christian philosopher Francis Schaeffer used to promote the idea of “true truth.” His concept was that the Biblical message is true fundamentally, apart from how one receives it or how it works in one’s life.

(David Guzik)

Albert Barnes

Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness – It never changes. The principles of thy law, of thy government, and of thy method of saving people, are the same under all dispensations, in every land, in all worlds; and they will remain the same forever. Human governments change. Old dynasties pass away. New laws are enacted under new administrations. Customs change. Opinions change. People change. The world changes. But as God himself never changes, so it is with his law. That law is founded on eternal truth and can never change.

And thy law is the truth – It is founded on “truth,” on the reality of things. It is so essentially founded on truth, it springs so certainly out of truth, or out of the reality of things, that it may be said to be the truth itself. He who understands the law of God understands what truth is, for it is the expression and the exponent of that which is true.

John Gill

Thy righteousness [is] an everlasting righteousness,…. Or, “is forever”. The rectitude of his nature, his faithfulness in his promises, and his kindness and beneficence to his people; and particularly the righteousness of God revealed in the Gospel; the righteousness of his Son, which he approves and accepts of, and imputes to him that believes. This is a righteousness that will last forever, will never be abolished; it will answer for them that have it in a time to come; it is of use throughout the whole of life, at death, in the day of judgment, and to all eternity; see Daniel 9:24;

and thy law [is] the truth; or “thy doctrine”; or “thy word,” as the Arabic version. The Scriptures are called the Scriptures of truth, Daniel 10:21 they come from the God of truth, and all that is contained in them is truth; the legal part of them is truth, and so is the Gospel; that is called the word of truth, and truth itself: it is concerning Christ, who is the truth; and it is directed into and made effectual by the Spirit of truth, and contains in it many excellent truths; and is therefore deservedly valued and esteemed by all good men; see John 17:17.

Matthew Henry

Observe,

That God’s word is righteousness, and it is an everlasting righteousness. It is the rule of God’s judgment, and it is consonant to his counsels from eternity and will direct his sentence for eternity. The word of God will judge us; it will judge us in righteousness, and by it our everlasting state will be determined. This should possess us with a very great reverence for the word of God that it is righteousness itself, the standard of righteousness, and it is everlasting in its rewards and punishments.

That God’s word is a law, and that law is truth. See the double obligation we are under to be governed by the word of God. We are reasonable creatures, and as such, we must be ruled by truth, acknowledging the force and power of it. If the principles are true, the practices must be agreeable to them, else we do not act rationally. We are creatures, and therefore subjects, and must be ruled by our Creator; and whatever he commands we are bound to obey as a law. See how these obligations are here twisted, these cords of a man. Here is truth brought to the understanding, there to sit chief, and direct the motions of the whole man; but, lest the authority of that should become weak through the flesh, here is a law to bind the will and bring that into subjection. God’s truth is a law (Jn. 18:37) and God’s law is the truth; surely we cannot break such words as these asunder.

Adam Clarke

Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness — The word צדק tsedek is a word of very extensive meaning in the Bible. It signifies, not only God’s inherent righteousness and perfection of nature, but also his method of treating others; his plan of redemption; his method of saving others. And the word δικαιοσυνη, which answers to it, in the Septuagint and in the New Testament, is used with the same latitude of meaning, and in the same sense; particularly in that remarkable passage, Romans 3:25-26, where see the notes. Thy merciful method of dealing with sinners and justifying the ungodly will last as long as the earth lasts; and thy law that witnesses this, in all its pages, is the truth.

The Pulpit Commentaries

Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness. With God there is “no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:27). His righteousness (צדקה) is pure abstract right (צדק), one and the same always—not shifting, like human ideas of justice. And thy Law is the truth. An embodiment of that immutable morality which rests upon a basis of absolute eternal truth.

Miscellaneous Comments

“Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,” etc. The original is better expressed thus, “Thy righteousness is righteousness everlastingly, and thy law is truth.” So the Septuagint. The English translation expresses the perpetuity of the righteousness, the original expresses also the character of it…God’s righteousness is essentially and eternally righteousness. The expressions are absolute; there is only this righteousness, and only this truth.

—John Stephen.
