The Wonder of His Word

My Notes

Scripture: “Your testimonies are wonderful; Therefore my soul keeps them.“ —Psalm 119:129 (NKJV)

With this verse, David opens a new section of Psalm 119 under the Hebrew letter Pe (פ), and he begins with a declaration of awe: “Your testimonies are wonderful.” The Hebrew word for “wonderful” (pele’) means extraordinary, surpassing the ordinary in beauty, depth, and power. David isn’t merely admiring the Word—he’s overwhelmed by it.

God’s testimonies are not just true; they are wondrous. They reveal the heart of God, the grace of Christ, and the hope of eternity. Their wisdom is unmatched, their purity unstained, their harmony perfect. They convict the soul and comfort the heart. They are majestic in style, comprehensive in scope, and transformative in effect.

It is a marvel that God would speak to sinful humanity at all—and even more so that His words would be so gracious, so mighty, so clear. The Scriptures are not dry doctrines or distant commands; they are living testimonies of divine love and eternal truth.

David’s response to this wonder is not passive admiration—it is active devotion. “Therefore my soul keeps them.” He treasures the Word deep within, like the tablets of testimony placed in the ark. He guards it, obeys it, and lets it shape his entire being. This is not surface-level obedience; it is soul-level keeping.

We do not truly keep God’s Word unless our souls keep it. It must dwell in the innermost place, where it can guide, convict, and comfort. Those who see the Word as wonderful will prize it, preserve it, and live by it.

Time to Reflect

  1. What aspects of God’s Word do I find most “wonderful”?

  2. How has Scripture brought conviction or comfort to my soul recently?

  3. Do I keep God’s testimonies at a soul level—or merely in outward behavior?

  4. What does it mean for me to treasure the Word like David did?

Prayer

Abba, Your testimonies are extraordinary—full of grace, truth, and power. I stand in awe that You would speak to me, and that Your words would be so rich, so clear, so life-giving. Help me not only to admire Your Word, but to keep it with my whole soul. Let it dwell in me richly, guiding my thoughts, shaping my desires, and anchoring my hope. May I treasure it as David did, and live by it with joy and reverence. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Summary of Commentaries:

Psalm 119:129 celebrates the extraordinary nature of God’s Word—described as “wonderful” in its clarity, depth, and power to transform. The commentaries below highlight its supernatural origin, flawless truth, and profound impact on the soul. Scripture reveals divine mysteries, comforts the broken, convicts the heart, and guides the obedient. David’s admiration leads to devotion; he doesn’t merely marvel at God’s testimonies—he keeps them with his whole soul. The Word is a treasure, not for speculation but for transformation. Its wonder compels reverence, study, and obedience. Those who know it best, love it most, and those who love it most, live by it faithfully.

NOTE: Psalm 119 has 22 sections which each section is represented by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Today, we’re looking at verse 129, which is in the 17th section, which is called “Pe פ”. The website https://www.abarim-publications.com/Hebrew_Alphabet_Meaning.html has this to say about the letter “Pe פ”: The word פה (peh) means mouth, but is often synonymous with speech. With a little goodwill, one may recognize a face with a mouth in the shape of this letter. The letter peh is written ף when it occurs at the end of a word, and פ when it occurs at the beginning or halfway through a word.

Commentaries:

Charles Spurgeon

“Thy commands are wonderful.” Full of wonderful revelations, commands, and promises. Wonderful in their nature, as being free from all error, and bearing within themselves overwhelming self-evidence of their truth; wonderful in their effects as instructing, elevating, strengthening, and comforting the soul. Jesus, the eternal Word, is called Wonderful, and all the uttered words of God are wonderful in their degree. Those who know them best wonder at them most. It is wonderful that God should have borne testimony at all to sinful men, and more wonderful still that his testimony should be of such a character, so clear, so full, so gracious, so mighty.

“Therefore doth my soul keep them.” Their wonderful character so impressed itself upon his mind that he kept them in his memory: their wonderful excellence so charmed his heart that he kept them in his life. Some men wonder at the words of God, and use them for their speculation; but David was always practical, and the more he wondered, the more he obeyed. Note that his religion was soul work; not with head and hand alone did he keep the testimonies, but his soul, his truest and most real self, held fast to them.

Albert Barnes

Thy testimonies are wonderful – This commences a new division of the psalm, indicated by the Hebrew letter Pe (פ p), corresponding to our “p.” The meaning of the expression here is, that the laws of God – the revelations of his will – are adapted to fill the mind with wonder. The mind is awed by their wisdom; their comprehensiveness; their extent; their spirituality; their benevolence: by the fact that laws are framed, so perfectly adapted to the end; so well suited to secure order, and to promote happiness.

Therefore doth my soul keep them – Because they are so surpassingly wise and benevolent; because they are so manifestly the work of wisdom and goodness.

John Gill

Thy testimonies [are] wonderful,…. The Scriptures, which testify of God, his mind and will, are wonderful both with respect to the author of them, the things contained in them, and the use and advantage of them. They give an account of the wonderful works of creation; of their author and matter; of the manner, order, and time of their being wrought: they relate many wonderful events of Providence, both in a way of mercy and judgment; they declare several surprising miracles, wrought by Moses and others, and exhibit many marvelous things in types and figures: are full of prophecies of extraordinary things, have been exactly accomplished, and contain many exceeding great and precious promises; and abound with doctrines abstruse and recondite, hid from the carnal sense and reason of men; the mysteries of the Gospel, and of the grace of God, such as respect the divine Persons in the Trinity; the person and grace of Christ; the wonderful love of God and Christ towards men; the amazing blessings of grace through him, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal life by him;

therefore doth my soul keep them; as a rich treasure, which he laid up in the cabinet of his heart, and preserved as what was most rare and valuable: and such are the wonderful things in the word of God; and such is the efficacy of its doctrines, and the influence the truths of it have upon the minds of gracious persons; that these engage them to keep and observe the precepts it enjoins, and that heartily and sincerely, with their whole spirit and soul.

Matthew Henry

See here how David was affected towards the word of God.

1. He admired it, as most excellent in itself: Thy testimonies are wonderful. The word of God gives us admirable discoveries of God, and Christ, and another world; admirable proofs of divine love and grace. The majesty of the style, the purity of the matter, the harmony of the parts are all wonderful. Its effects upon the consciences of men, both for conviction and comfort, are wonderful; and it is a sign that we are not acquainted with God’s testimonies, or do not understand them, if we do not admire them.

2. He adhered to it as of constant use to him: “Therefore doth my soul keep them, as a treasure of inestimable value, which I cannot be without.” We do not keep them to any purpose unless our souls keep them. There they must be deposited, as the tables of testimony in the ark; there they must have the innermost and uppermost place. Those that see God’s word to be admirable will prize it highly and preserve it carefully, as that which they promise themselves great things from.

Miscellaneous Comments

“Thy testimonies are wonderful.” The Scriptures are “wonderful,” with respect to the matter which they contain, the manner in which they are written, and the effects which they produce. They contain the most sublime spiritual truths, veiled under external ceremonies and sacraments, figurative descriptions, typical histories, parables, similitudes, etc. When properly opened and enforced, they terrify and humble, they convert and transform, they console and strengthen. Who but must delight to study and to “observe” these “testimonies” of the will and the wisdom, the love and the power of God Most High! While we have these holy writings, let us not waste our time, misemploy our thoughts, and prostitute our admiration, by doting on human follies, and wondering at human trifles.

—George Horne.

“Thy testimonies are wonderful.” The Bible itself is an astonishing and standing miracle. Written fragment by fragment through the course of fifteen centuries, under different states of society, and in different languages, by persons of the most opposite tempers, talents, and conditions, learned and unlearned, prince and peasant, bond and free; cast into every form of instructive composition and good writing; history, prophecy, poetry, allegory, emblematic representation, judicious interpretation, literal statement, precept, example, proverbs, disquisition, epistle, sermon, prayer—in short, all rational shapes of human discourse, and treating, moreover, on subjects not obvious, but most difficult; its authors are not found like other men, contradicting one another upon the most ordinary matters of fact and opinion, but are at harmony upon the whole of their sublime and momentous scheme.

—J. MacLagan, 1788-1852.
